RE: Judge, 221st Judicial District
I get very disturbed when I see a good candidate getting trashed by a pack of lies. And that’s what’s happening in this race for 221st District Court, so I’m stepping up to set things straight. A letter to the editor was posted in The Courier last week and it’s just chocked full of false statements, half truths and flat out lies about my friend, John Devine.
I’ve been politically active here in Montgomery County for a long time, but few people here know that I’ve also been active in Harris Co. as well. I’ve been both a member (and President) of Texas Tea Party Republican Women, a large group of conservative Republicans for well over 10 years. And that’s where I met John and his wife Nubia, who were members there too.
I know John well enough to know these facts: John has been both appointed and elected to judicial positions. He’s run for office and won, and run for office and lost. So what!? Scott Golemon ran for a judicial position 2 years ago and lost too. Truth be known, conservatives have begged John to run for office because they genuinely trust him and it’s very hard to find honest, conservative candidates that will uphold the Constitution.
More facts: John has never lived in Ft. Bend Co. and has never run for Tom Delay’s seat or any other position in Ft. Bend Co. He’s lived in the NW Houston area all 20 years of his married life. Over 3 years ago he moved his family from Tomball to Magnolia, which is a great place to raise their 6 children. What’s wrong with that? John moved here way before this 221st District Court became an open seat.
It’s true that, as an attorney, he’s represented some plaintiffs, just as Scott Golemon has. But neither he nor his law firm has represented class action law suits. [Really, where do they come up with this stuff?] And his campaign is NOT funded by a bunch of liberal trial lawyers from Harris Co. either. Liberals don’t like John Devine.
John has been practicing law, but is also well-qualified to serve as a “Special Judge” anywhere in Texas – not only in Harris Co. It’s true that he doesn’t currently hold an elected judicial office. But he’s able to use the title “judge” because he’s presently on the active list of special judges who can be asked to serve at any time, 24/7 anywhere in Texas. John’s 7 years of experience as District Judge and his present status as a “Special Judge” set him apart from the other good candidates in this race. I know this is disappointing to them, but these are the facts and John isn’t trying to deceive anybody about this. John has had over 7 years of full-time experience sitting as a District Judge and he’s the only candidate in this race who has any judicial experience whatsoever.
Some attorneys in Harris Co. don’t like him because as a sitting judge, he threw out some frivolous lawsuits, and
then he sanctioned the lawyers who filed them! [ Reminds me a little of Ted Poe...] Some attorneys in Montgomery Co. don’t like him because he doesn’t have any good ol’ boy relationships at the courthouse here [another plus in my book!] In addition to all that, most liberals everywhere don’t like him because he refused to take down the TEN COMMANDMENTS from his courtroom décor when the ACLU attorneys sued him!! Activism? Call it whatever you want, but I call it courage.
You know, when I’m voting in elections I expect honesty and fairness from all the candidates. In my opinion, the race should be won on merit, experience and achievements, not on false or misleading accusations against opponents. On March 2nd, I’ll be voting for John Devine, a strong family man, active in his church and community, and a proven and experienced judge. I hope you will too.
